Tuesday, 16 November, saw the MND Association’s first ever councillor event, a springboard for action just a few short weeks after the launch of phase two of the Act to Adapt campaign.
The campaign is calling on councils across England to improve the support they provide to people with MND by:
- Introducing a fast-track process for people with MND
- Removing the financial assessment for Disabled Facilities Grants for adaptations that cost a minimum of £5,000
Responding with interest and enthusiasm, dozens of councillors from across England attended what was a truly inspiring event.
Councillors heard more about this vital campaign, with contributions from MND Association staff explaining why the improvement of services for people with MND is so critical, and how this can be achieved.
These policy and campaigning priorities were supported by powerful testimony from those affected by MND – emotive and compelling stories of how the system needs to be improved as a matter of great urgency.
Finally, an example of good council practice showed how barriers can be overcome and positive solutions found where the will exists.
Councillors were then provided with the opportunity to speak to people affected by MND, MND Association staff, and each other, in order to learn more about current council provision, and to determine the way forward to improve these services.
These discussions culminated in commitments on the part of councillors to take the campaign asks of Act to Adapt forward by holding key meetings with their colleagues.
The Association welcomes these commitments and looks forward to engaging with those councillors present, and others, to turn commitments into real change for people with MND.
Everyone with MND must be able to live in a safe and accessible home.
