3 October 2022 Care

A new role which is set to improve motor neurone disease (MND) care in the West Midlands will launch in October thanks to funding from the MND Association.

The MND Care Coordinator post will provide additional support at the Birmingham MND Care Centre, one of the largest centres in the UK and the fifth of its kind to be established by the Association. The role will work alongside two MND specialist nurses which were previously funded by the MND Association and taken on by the University Hospitals of Birmingham NHS Trust in 2020.

Beth Pudjianto, who has worked as a speech and language therapist for the NHS since 2014, will start the role on 3 October 2022.

“The new MND Care Coordinator will greatly improve the capability of the Birmingham MND Care Centre to deliver and improve care for people with MND. We’ve been working to secure this appointment since April 2020 when we handed over responsibility for the MND Specialist Nurses to the NHS, and we are really pleased to welcome Beth to the team.

“Special thanks must go to MND Specialist Nurse Caroline Davies and the team at the Care Centre for their incredible work which has provided the critical foundations for this exciting next chapter.”

Chris Bennett, Head of Regional Care Partnerships – Central and West, said:

“I am very much looking forward to joining the established team at the Queen Elizabeth MND Care Centre. I hope to create an infrastructure for consultants, clinical nurse specialists and members of the multidisciplinary team so that they are able to provide excellent patient care.

“I strongly believe in collaborative working and shared governance to create quality care which reflects the latest research findings.”

The new funding agreement for the MND Care Coordinator post will continue until at least October 2026.
