The MND Association has launched an interactive Electricity Cost Calculator specifically designed for individuals living with motor neurone disease (MND) and their carers.
This tool aims to help families better understand the rising electricity costs associated with using essential medical and assistive equipment. Living with MND presents numerous challenges, and financial strain is a significant concern for many households.
With nearly 72% of people living with MND relying on personal powered equipment—such as ventilators, powered wheelchairs, and communication devices—electricity bills can be substantial.
Previous research highlights that families managing advanced stages of the condition can spend between £800 and £900 a month on electricity, translating to over £10,000 a year.
This is only becoming more prevalent given the recent 10% increase in the Energy Price Cap in October. In response to these challenges, the MND Association’s Electricity Cost Calculator enables users to input their equipment usage and receive tailored estimates of their electricity costs.
This tool not only provides crucial insights into household expenses but also allows users to contribute data that will help the Association advocate for improved financial support for families affected by MND.

In recognition of the financial pressures faced by many, the MND Association is also increasing its cost of living support fund from £350 to £500. It is designed to help ease the burden of household bills and essential expenses.
“The rising cost of living has placed immense pressure on those living with MND, making it more difficult to afford essential equipment,” said Alex Massey, Head of Campaigning, Policy and Public Affairs.
“By using the calculator, families can gain a clearer understanding of their energy costs and help us highlight the need for policy changes that support them.”
The MND Association is committed to providing financial support for various needs, including help with household bills, funding for essential equipment, and assistance for children and young people living with someone with MND.
This support is intended to complement any statutory funding available and help ease the financial burden on families.
We encourage supporters to participate in this initiative. By using the calculator, you can help us gather vital data that can drive advocacy efforts. Together, we can make a significant impact on the lives of those affected by MND.
