A researcher funded by the Ice Bucket Challenge has had her work published in respected journal, Cell.
Dr Martina Hallegger, from University College London, began her work in 2016 as one of the first researchers funded by donations received through the Ice Bucket Challenge in 2014.
The research was an international collaboration with Prof Jim Shorter, University of Pennsylvania and Dr Nick Fawzi, Brown University.
Dr Hallegger’s work is based around the protein TDP-43, which is widely reported to play a major role in the development of MND. Dr Hallegger begins to unravel some of the mysteries of how mutations in TDP-43 influence its function in cells and how this affects RNA binding and gene regulation.
This work will be the foundation for follow-up studies for Dr Hallegger, and the wider MND research community.
