The National Neurosciences Advisory Group (NNAG) has published a new guidance document, the Optimum Clinical Pathway for motor neurone disease (MND). The MND Optimum Clinical Pathway was developed by a group of MND clinical experts, with the support of the MND Association, the Neurological Alliance and people living with MND.
The Optimum Clinical Pathway sets out what good MND treatment, care and support looks like across all stages of the MND pathway, from initial presentation and diagnosis to ongoing management and end-of-life care. It is aimed at supporting commissioners and planners to improve MND services locally and ensure they meet the needs of people living with MND. It strongly emphasises the importance of a coordinated, multi-disciplinary approach to MND care, supported by timely access to a wide range of interventions across health and care services.
We are now working to engage commissioning organisations such as Integrated Care Boards to share the pathway and encourage them to consider how they can take forward its recommendations in their local area and deliver high quality coordinated care for everyone living with MND.
