Today the MND Association is remembering our late patron, Professor Stephen Hawking, who died a year ago.
Professor Hawking lived with motor neurone disease for 55 years having been diagnosed at the age of 21 while at university, a story told in the 2015 Oscar winning film The Theory of Everything.
The theoretical physicist and cosmologist gained international acclaim for his unparalleled work on black holes, including his most famous book, the record-breaking, A Brief History of Time. Most recently his work has been immortalised on a commemorative 50p coin released this week to mark British Science Week.
His involvement with the MND Association began when the charity was founded in 1979. In 2008 he became a patron, a title he held until his death. And his legacy continues, thanks to the generosity of The Stephen Hawking Foundation which continues to fundraise and raise awareness, helping to improve the lives of people living with MND.
