13 June 2022 Care
We’ve been successful at the BMA/PLG Patient Information Awards 2022! We’re overwhelmed that our resources about MND and Kennedy’s disease have been consistently highly commended, shortlisted or given the overall honours at these awards over the past decade.
This year our new booklet, Sex and relationships for people affected by MND or Kennedy’s disease), was longlisted to the top ten, then shortlisted into top five. We are delighted that this sensitive subject area has been given a spotlight and hope this helps break down some of the barriers in opening emotional conversations with health and social care professionals. See the guide and more on our Relationships and family information page.
In the review for the award, this inclusive booklet was found to be,
“An important, sensitively co-produced resource dealing with physical and sexual relationships, intimacy and libido, that includes novel work on the safeguarding of sex worker involvement with people with disabilities.”
The booklet also looks at the impact of medical interventions such as assisted ventilation and tube feeding on sexual confidence. While sexual function is not usually affected, problems with movement, mobility and communication can make sexual expression more difficult.
The overall award for Patient Information 2022 was awarded to Having a Baby by Beyond Words, so a huge congratulations to them.
The standard of entries this year was exceptional. Read more about the awards and the winning resources on the BMA website.
