An interview study to aid the understanding of how oral health is affected for people living with MND.
Multidisciplinary teams play a crucial role in providing care and support for people living with Motor Neurone Disease (MND). However, dental professionals are not typically included in these teams, and there is limited guidance on addressing the oral health needs of individuals with MND. Maintaining good oral health is essential for quality of life and can help prevent serious complications, such as aspiration pneumonia—an infection caused by food or liquid entering the lungs. This project aims to explore how best to support people with MND in maintaining their oral health. By engaging with individuals living with MND and health and social care professionals, researchers will gain valuable insights into their specific oral health challenges and identify effective strategies for improving care.
This study is funded by the MND Association and more detail about the study can be found on our 'research we fund' webpage here.
Taking Part
What does taking part involve?
The researchers are looking for individuals living with MND to share their experiences of how the condition has affected their oral health. These insights will help the researchers to understand the challenges and supports related to maintaining good oral hygiene and accessing dental care.
Participants will be invited to a one-on-one interview lasting no longer than 60 minutes. The interview can be conducted online or at a convenient location for the participant. A family member or carer is welcome to be present during the session. Interviews can be audio or video recorded.
