Walk to D’Feet MND 8th September 2024
The 2024 Walk to D’feet MND was held at Lydiard Park Swindon. A combined event with the North Wiltshire Group.
The weather was surprisingly good and it was a joy to see the MND community come together. The mass of blue shirts flowing round the park gave the MND great exposure. It is a boost for all of us who volunteer to see such support.
Well done to everyone who got round the course. We appreciate that for some ambulant and some wheelchair users, doing a trail is not easy. One highlight was Anthony. He pushed his wife Tina in her chair for a lap, then went off to run/walk the second lap. Well done that man!
The fundraising for the event was amazing. Once the Just Giving, Gift Aid, cash donations and known sponsorship promises come in we should be close to £3000 raised for the two branches. That is truly remarkable. The funds will go towards supporting local people with MND and of course contributing to the international effort to find a treatment.
Prestbury Mini Marathon
Sunday 26th March 2023
We just wanted to say a big 'thank you' to the Gloucestershire branch for turning out in force today in support of our event (in spite of the weather!)
We had another good turnout of over 20 teams and have moved our fundraising total closer to our £6,000 target. We are sat at £5,654 as I type this and I am sure there is a bit more to come still from teams who participated today.
Attached is a snap of the team, still in remarkably good spirits after a couple of damp, breezy hours!
Best Regards,
Robin & Rachel

Swimathon

Location: Cheltenham Lido
The Autumn Sun Shone - all bit it a little chilly - When Joanne Byrne bravely set the challenge to 25 of her friends and work colleagues to swim 2.5 or 5k of the Cheltenham Lido.
Such a great atmosphere was set with an opening speech by Alex Chalk MP who spoke about the many challenges faced by those touched by MND and how our charity needs every ounce of support we can muster. Alex took to the water with the first set of swimmers - lots of applause and cheers of encouragement continued as each set of new swimmers bravely swam their distance.
All Souls Tea Room
Date: 9th June 2018
Location: The Abbey Tea Rooms, 59 Church Street, GL20 5RZ
With a gorgeous array of home-baked cakes and goodies, we were set for a fantastic fundraiser. A raffle added to the funds brilliantly and raised awareness of our group with many swimmers and families who were at the lido for one of the final weeks of the season. Huge thanks to Jo and the generous band of swimmers for giving their time and achieving so much sponsorship for the event and to Chris Geeson and Family for the delicious cakes and arranging the raffle.

Derby County AFC Quiz Night
£3100 Raised by Derby County FC Quiz Night for MNDA Gloucestershire and Derbyshire18th July 2023
This event was organised by MNDA Gloucestershire in partnership with the Derbyshire branch to raise funds to support people in both counties living with MND.
We are delighted to announce that over £3100 was raised on the night attended by nearly 200 fans, Club owner David Clowes and former DCFC players at Pride Park, the home of Derby County Football Club. Derby poet Jamie Thrasivoulou opened proceedings with a rousing performance of his poem “We Are Derby”, followed by eight rounds of questions dedicated to the Rams.
The evening was peppered with lots of laughter, applause and banter, especially among former team-mates who were very competitive. The winning team ‘The Eastsiders’ was captained by Dave Corser. They had an almost encyclopaedic knowledge of Derby County’s history by scoring 79 points out of 88 and with Mark Sims' team ‘The Eagle has landed’ just a point behind. Overall the scoring was very high with nine teams scoring over 70 points.
The quiz was organised by MNDA Glos Secretary Peter Mills whose childhood friend and fellow DCFC supporter Martin Kelly has Motor Neurone Disease. Martin was able to watch the early part of the quiz from his home in Sheffield.
Co-organiser Martin Allsop compéred most quiz rounds but the highlight was when former players Kevin Wilson, Steve Powell, Roy McFarland and Roger Davies took the microphone to ask questions.
In total, the auction raised £475 for three items: a football shirt and print (signed by former players on the night) and a trophy donated by Steve Powell.. The envelope raffle with Rams memorabilia prizes raised over £1650.
Guest of honour, former Derby Headmaster and MND sufferer, Richard Feist, was delighted to spend time talking to his heroes Roy McFarland and Roger Davies.
On a serious note, Eric Steele recalled how fellow DCFC player Rob Hindmarch died of MND. Eric said “MND is a cause we’re happy to support because it really hits home. We’re all living longer so we need a better quality of life and we need to raise the bar!” Kevin Wilson added “We try to give something back and it’s so good what Kevin Sinfield is doing (raising awareness & funds).”
Club owner David Clowes added “It’s been an absolutely fantastic night! I’ve really enjoyed it and it’s a fantastic cause the money is going to.” Former players gave their verdict with Roy Davies commenting “It’s been a brilliant night! I didn’t know what to expect but it’s been really magical. All the lads and the people have had a great evening!” Attendee, John Barry from Derby College added “It was an excellent event. Faultless. Very well-organised.”
Finally, it wouldn’t do to finish without a word from “The Guvnor”, rams legend Roy McFarland. He said “It’s been a fantastic night. It involved everyone in the room, put a smile on their faces and it’s a great cause we’ve been here for.” All money raised will make a difference to MND Sufferers in Derbyshire and Gloucestershire with grants awarded for specialised equipment such as wheelchairs, breathing equipment, transport and respite care.
