About the project

Muscle wasting is commonly seen in MND. Satellite cells (SCs) are stem cells present in muscle, which help to replace damaged muscle fibres. This project will investigate the role of SCs in MND, and whether changes in SCs could be used as a biomarker to predict progression of disease. The researchers will also transplant new SCs into mouse models of MND to see if this can preserve muscles and prolong lifespan.

What could this mean for MND research?

This project is looking to identify a marker to help predict the progression of MND, as well as investigating whether replacing SCs could help to prevent muscle wastage. This could lead to the development of a potential new biomarker and treatment for MND.
